Indonesia needs more altruistic leaders

Altruism is an ethical approach to leadership that suggest that actions are moral if their primary purpose is to promote the best interest of others.  In fact, Altruism entails that a leader may even go against their own morals and values as long as it is in the best interest of others.  In this article I was looking at, Indonesia is in a time of crisis where the Country is going into debt and the rich keep getting richer and the poor keep getting poorer.  With the standard in Indonesia that high ranking officials get big annual pay raises and luxury cars it is hard for the lower class of people to advance anywhere in society.

There is the argument that pay increases deter from corrupt officials and keep everyone in the cabinet honest and loyal.  There is the argument however that if officials are not paid enough then they cannot support their family and then in return they will end up stealing money from the state.  But how can high ranking officials argue over money when more than half the country in earning less than half of what the top ranking officials are.

Indonesia is in desperate need of a altruistic leader and in need of one fast.  The people need a leader who can take a step back and look at what is happening to their followers and act accordingly to help.  Even though it is against the beliefs of way the officials should get paid, they need a leader who will go away from their personal beliefs and act to help the greater population.  Indonesia needs to freeze the pay raises to high ranking officials and needs to spend time and money on the people and restore their faith in their country.

Do you think it is right for a President to continue to give officials pay raises when the greater population is stuggling?

Do you agree or disagree with me that the President of Indonesia needs to display more Altruistic characteristics?

  1. I do not believe that a President should be granted the right to pay officials higher pay when their country is suffering. If Indonesia wants their country to bring together the gap between the rich and poor, they need to look closer at the situation. I believe that they should put a cap or freeze on the highest ranking officials in order to do that.

I also believe that the President of Indonesia needs to display more altruistic characteristics. If a leader needs to go against his own values in order to meet the interests of his people, I believe he needs to do so. A crisis such as this is put into his hands for a reason and his people should be able to trust him to make the right actions for them. I think he needs to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. There are obviously many issues contributing to this issue, and by looking at the bigger picture the leader may be able to devise a better plan for his people in their interest.

  3. I definitely do not think that a President's should be able to continue to give pay raises, especially when the the rest of his country, who he is supposed to be looking out for, is suffering. I agree with Lauren, when she said that a cap or freeze should be put on the salary of high ranking officials. To be honest, I don't think that these people should be put in the position they are if the President is worried about them stealing money if they are not paid enough. In a sense, these high ranking officials need to be looking out for the public just as much as the President needs to.

I also agree that the President needs to display more Altruistic leadership characteristics. His job is to look out for the greater good of all his people, not just high ranking officials. This is an extreme case when the president needs to go against what he believes, and look out for the majority of people involved.

  4. I agree with all of you. I think it is clear that the President of Indonesia needs to display more altruistic characteristics. The President need to go away from his personal beliefs and act to help the greater population.

Actually, in time of crisis over the whole world, I think Altruistic Leadership is more important than ever. People need a leader that are fair, telling the thruth, keeping promises and respecting others. Freezing the salaries is, in my opinion, a good start for the President of Indonesia to be more altruistic.

  5. Once again I agree with all of the posts. It is ridiculous that these pay raises have been given out year in and year out. It is the complete opposite of altruistic behavior, it is ethic egoistic. The president of Indonesia cares only about himself and high ranking officials. With his leadership (or lack of) Indonesian people will continue to be in a financial rut. This topic is very similar to the CEO pay thread that we discussed in an earlier post. Shows that even leaders of countries are susceptible to unethical behavior, just on a much larger scale.
